Living Dairy-Free Isn’t So Hard After All

It’s no secret that the consumption of dairy products has been slowly decreasing in the last 15 years for a number of reasons. Some people go dairy-free for physical reasons, those being lactose intolerance, allergies, and weight gain. Others do it for ethical reasons, to help save animals and our planet. Whatever the reasons are, going dairy-free can be a bit daunting, so here are some helpful tips to live dairy-free without the stress:

1. Be more vigilant

It may be obvious for some, for others, being extra vigilant and reading labels to avoid any kind of dairy isn’t. Living dairy-free isn't as simple as solely not consuming milk. Unfortunately, keeping an eye out for any milk ingredient additives is crucial. Casein and whey are proteins found in cow’s milk, keep an eye out for them when reading labels. Additionally, soy, cashew, and almond milk are delicious substitutes to accompany your dairy-free cereals or coffee in the morning!

2. Alternatives

It might be daunting at first to give up dairy since many food favorites such as ice cream, yogurt, mayonnaise, butter, cheese, pastries, and other foods are just so tasty! Fortunately, there are alternatives to these. Take ice cream, for instance. You could enjoy coconut, rice or soy-based ice creams that are equally as tasty as their dairy counterpart. There are dairy-free mayo, cheeses, yogurts and other products you could enjoy as well. So, if you think you’d be missing out on yummy foods, think again!

3. Non-dairy calcium

With cutting out dairy in your diet, which is the primary source of calcium for many, you have to make sure you eat the right foods to get the calcium intake you would otherwise get with dairy. Nut-based milk is a great source, as well as almonds, seeds, sardines, beans and dark leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli, and kale. Calcium is very important for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles, so do some research and stay informed on how to fully nourish your body.

Living a dairy-free life doesn’t have to be difficult, and once you start going at it, it’ll become clear that it’s a piece cashew-based cheesecake!
