Now’s The Time to Start Baking With Sourdough

You may be practicing social distancing either due to a city or state order, or perhaps out of an abundance of caution, or you may be in home under self quarantine due to recent travel or exposure to the Coronavirus. Whatever the case, if you’re stuck at home and need to find a way to pass the time, there’s no better time to start baking with sourdough! But wait, don’t you need a sourdough starter in order to start baking? Yes, you do, but the good news is you can make one yourself, and it’s incredibly easy!

What is a sourdough starter? Simply put, a sourdough starter is nothing more than a mixture of flour and water, that’s it! You can find specific instructions online, but the basic principle involves little more than mixing equal parts flour and water, letting it sit, then feeding it with more flour and water. After a few days, maybe a week, you’ll have a bubbly sourdough starter full of natural yeast that’s ready to bake with! To keep the quantity of sourdough starter under control you’ll want to discard some before feeding it with more flour and water, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw away all that discard! Even before the starter is ready to use, you can use that discard in a variety of different recipes. Our favorite is buttery sourdough biscuits, but there are countless recipes to be found online. So what are you waiting for? Did into that pantry, pull out that flour, and get started today!
