Fibre: The Key to Eating Well and Feeling Well!

Want to be healthy and maintain a healthy body weight while enjoying delicious foods? Sounds impossible, right? Well, good news, it’s far from impossible if you include plenty of fibre in your diet! A diet rich in fibre from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and complex carbohydrates like whole grains is of immense importance, and should definitely be favored over whatever low-carb diet fad is currently making its rounds through the popular press.

Don’t get us wrong, some of the popular diets out there do have their merits. That said, diets that do little more than restrict carbohydrates are missing out on the bigger picture. The war on carbohydrates may stem from our overdependence (and overindulgence) on sugar. Researchers and dieticians have long been warning of the dangers of excess sugar consumption, although those warnings have long been downplayed by major producers of sugary foods. Sugars are simple carbohydrates, not to be confused with the complex carbohydrates found in whole grains and some leafy greens, which are rich in fibre.

The benefits of fibre are numerous: not only is fibre an important source of fuel for the body, it also helps the body absorb nutrients. Fibre also contributes to good heart health, and helps cut the chances of heart disease and early death from heart disease. As if that weren’t enough, fibre also helps prevent the development of type 2 diabetes, and of course, it keeps us regular. So when planning for your next week’s meals, it may well be worth finding a way to include more fibre!

Mornings can be, well, a bit hectic, to say the least. And while the pandemic has generally slowed life down, it doesn’t always feel that way when you start the day. Hectic mornings can often lead to skipping breakfast, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as they say! With that in mind, the team here at Dineread took a look into our collection of ebooks and audiobooks to bring you these suggestions for make-ahead breakfasts that are quick and easy.

Overnight oats. Take some oatmeal, pour in some milk or substitute of your choice, and let it sit in the fridge overnight. What could be easier? You can experiment with oat to milk ratio until you get the consistency you like, and you can flavor your oatmeal with almost anything imaginable.

Oatmeal muffins. Don’t have time to sit down for a bowl of oatmeal in the morning? No problem! It takes a little bit of extra effort, but you can bake that oatmeal into oatmeal muffins, which are not only nutritious but are easy to grab as you head out the door.

Hard boiled eggs. Long considered a breakfast staple, eggs can be a bit time consuming in the morning. Hard boiled eggs, however, are easy to make ahead, last for several days in the fridge, and can also be grabbed on the go. They make for great daytime snacks too, not just breakfast!

Is Your Craft Coffee Roaster Ruining Your Coffee With Packaging?

If you didn’t jump in on the craft beer or craft cocktail craze, you may have given in when it comes to craft coffee. And we get it, we love our craft coffee too, especially when it comes from local, independent roasters. But some of those roasters may be making packaging choices that are negatively affecting the flavor of your coffee. How can you tell? By the bag, of course.

Traditionally, coffee beans are stored in air-tight bags with one-way valves to allow CO2 and other gases from the roasting process to escape. The better roasters will even flush out the oxygen from the bag before loading it with beans. Any bag that doesn’t have a valve to let gasses escape, or any bag that’s porous and allows oxygen to get in (think those cute craft paper bags) are doing your coffee beans a great disservice.

Here’s what Klaus Thomsen, co-owner of Danish roaster Coffee Collective had to say in an interview with Sprudge:

“Our experiments figured out that the best thing is to remove the oxygen, so we flushed with nitrogen, straight from the beginning, so there's none of that oxidation happening. So that means that your degassing can sort of happen on its own,” said Thomsen. Even if your coffee hasn't been nitrogen-flushed, a well-sealed valve bag should go a long way towards keeping its contents intact before brewing.”
